Maynard Keller

Maynard James Keller, MSW, has been engaged in Utah Drug Law reform work since
2012.  Prior to that, growing up in Weber County and Salt Lake, he graduated from the
U, attended several graduate schools and had a 35 year professional career with the New
York State Office of Mental Health at a children’s psychiatric center.
He began as a psychiatric social worker, and then directed an experimental foster
care program for mentally ill children. He moved into Quality Assurance work, wrote a text
book on the principles of treatment for inpatient-based child care workers and then worked
as a staff trainer, technical writer, JCAHO accreditation standards compliance specialist
and eventually as the center’s Director for Continuing and Professional Education before
returning to Utah.
Maynard’s educational background is in experimental psychology (HBA in Utah and grad
work at Brown University), social work (MSW, U. of Utah), photography and poetry. He
also suffers from chronic pain after traumatic injury leaving him with degenerative disc
disease, but remains active in cause and other work.
His reform efforts include ongoing participation in the Harm Reduction Project which
helped pass legislation on improved access to Naloxone in 2014, and has worked in
Students for Sensible Drug Policies, and other groups which preceded TRUCE’s founding.
He is TRUCE’s Community Page Blog Editor, reporting on ongoing news about and
scientific literature around medical cannabis, is on TRUCE’s Social Media Team, helps
analyze legislation, research and assists other teams wherever his diverse skill set fits
ongoing need.
